Our goal is to provide a professional, positive, and safe environment that is open to riders and horses of all levels (Mission Statement). Our training philosophy integrates a wide variety of approaches, ultimately resulting in well-rounded horses and riders capable of maximizing enjoyment and performance in the show ring.
Depending on the level of knowledge the horse and/or rider already have, the work descriptions will vary. We design an agenda of each training session based on the horse and/or rider's ability to move forward to the next stage of training, with a strong understanding of foundations that have already been set. This approach is maintained as each horse and/or rider advances from the very basics to upper-level competition.
Perhaps the most rewarding part of our work at Rancho Pura Vida is watching our riders progress in their riding skills and confidence, achieve goals, get past problem areas, and just enjoy themselves in this very challenging sport.
We give both private and group lessons in a progressive program that defines riding levels from novice to advanced. This program gives our riders a clear view of their present riding level and what they need to do to get to the next level. Most of our lesson riders have horses in training with us or trailer their horses in for lessons, but we have some great schoolmaster-type horses that are available to give lessons to riders who don't have a horse of their own.
We also do a lot of showing. Traveling to horse shows for competition or schooling gives our riders many opportunities to advance their riding by performing in a different environment, being judged, and learning how to handle distractions and pressures they don't encounter at home.

Every horse teaches us something new -- we are continually learning.
"Gentle Horse Training" describes our general approach. We try to make each training session a positive experience for the horse. We use our past experiences to provide the best learning environment for each individual horse, while being open minded to recognize the need for adjustments in our approach. We think there can be a good balance between offering challenges to the horse to advance their abilities, and paying attention to the horses as they show us what works for them.
